Lower back pain is a common ailment that many athletes and casual fitness enthusiasts suffer from due to a variety of reasons. Strenuous exercises like squats or dead lifts, core exercises which if done incorrectly can lead to lower back injuries. Back injuries can also occur on the field during play.Players in such sports as football, baseball, basketball, etc are susceptible to lower back injuries because of the constant abuse their bodies go through when engaged in their respective sports.

There are a number of remedies prescribed by physicians and physical therapists to treat lower back pain. Medication is one common treatment, others include physical therapy, lotions, and stretching as some of the ways to deal with lower back injuries.

Padding in sports and fitness equipment is an overlooked method of treating lower back injuries.  Materials such as the MitiGator Cushioning system, developed by Sea Systems Group, can be installed in braces and pads for the lower back protecting the athlete from a violent collision during play. The MitiGator can be installed in fitness equipment such as benches and smith machines that can provide additional support to the lower back when  a person is either laying flat or sitting on the bench during an exercise.

Lower back pain can prevent athletes and weekend warriors from enjoying physical activity. Taking the right steps necessary to prevent injury can improve the quality of physical activity one engages in to stay fit and perform on the field.
